Matt was born and raised on Sydney's Northern Beaches. His affinity with the ocean reaches across his artistic practice, his sport and leisure pursuits, right through to his deep appreciation for the natural world. Originally free diving to salvage old and very heavy iron chain and pipe from Warriewood's abandoned ocean outfall, Matt has now incorporated scuba to speed up what was a very long process. Recycling everything from Pittwater mooring chain to steel offcuts and Sandstone, he forges and shapes in metal into sculptures that reflect the elemental nature of the sea and coast, letting natural form speak through a primal material. His sculptural works represent his connection to the ocean and its inhabitants, the human need to be connected with water, memories of time well spent in and on the living ocean, and the intricate workings of an ecosystem that is essential to the health and well being of all life and the planet we live on. Matt’s works are held in public and private art collections both in Australia and overseas.
